  • Pain in the morning before getting out of bed
  • Pain when standing for long hours
  • Pain the heel during activity
  • Pain in the heel after activity or during rest
  • Pain in the heel at the end of the day

One of the biggest problems you will face once you have developed heel pain is knowing what is causing it. With out knowing the cause, your treatment will be haphazard at best and a little bit of pot luck.

When we get to the bottom of what is causing the pain your treatment can go ahead in leaps and bounds.

So what causes heel pain? Today we will be looking at two common reasons for heel pain.

The first common reason you get heel pain is from a condition called Plantar Fasciosis

A highly common diagnosis, this is the straining and thickening of the band (fascia) that holds up the arch of the foot. This fascia is also needed so that you can lift your heel off the ground when walking.

Plantar fasciosis is usually an effect of

  • Standing for long hours
  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Trauma
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Insufficient flexion through the ankles
  • Poor footwear
  • Running
  • High arched feet
  • Flatfeet
  • Excessive Rolling in of foot during gait

Usually plantar fasciosis is treatable with podiatric care including a personalised exercise plan. The quicker you seek help the quicker the recovery as a condition that has been present for a long time usually  takes  longer to recover in comparison to one that has just begun.

The second most common reason for developing heel pain is Heel Spur Syndrome and yes not all heel pain is from heel spurs.

You can get pain in your heels if you have a spur. What is a spur? It is deposits of bone that are placed at the base of your heel when it undergoes too much stress.   Heel spur syndrome is often confused with plantar fasciosis. Although heel spurs can cause pain, there are also many people in the population who may have heel spurs that produce no pain at all.

Plantar fasciosis and Heel spur syndrome  need different treatment approaches in order to get them better. What will make one worse will make the other one better. So as you can see. Knowing which condition you have is critical
